Toms River
Dover Township and Toms River have a rich history that still is very much alive in the region. Dover Township was chartered in June of 1767. In the early 1780s, the British attacked and burned Toms River, causing a delay in the Revolutionary War peace talks in Paris. When Ocean County was established in 1850, Dover Township was established as the county seat. Today, the Ocean County Historical Society and the Dover Township Historic Preservation Commission maintain a local museum and organize events to celebrate and remember Toms River’s history. Visitors can enjoy the Ocean County Historical Museum and the Toms River Seaport Society Maritime Museum & Park. Events such as the Founders’ Day Celebration in June and the Old Time Antiques & Collectibles Faire in August also help keep the history of the region alive. The Toms River Business Improvement District (BID) and the Revitalization Committee organize other events throughout the year in downtown Toms River to attract visitors and to celebrate local culture.

Popular local activities include river cruises, shopping at the Ocean County Mall, golfing at one of two public Ocean County golf courses and participating in a variety of recreational endeavors at the Cattus Island County Park. Cattus Island County Park encompasses nearly 500 acres of environmentally sensitive land. The park is known for its miles of trails and beautiful views of Silver Bay. Visitors can enjoy bird-watching, crabbing, skiing, fishing and hiking. The facility also includes a picnic area, playground and restroom facilities. The Cooper Environment Center is located within the park. The center maintains collections of reptiles and runs several education programs, including a Junior Naturalist program.
